  • On March 07th, 2018, Starburcks opened a visitor’s center at Hacienda Alsacia, its 240 hectare experimental coffee farm on the slopes of the Poás volcano in the province of Alajuela. The visit includes a tour that takes about an hour and half and a coffee tasting. There it is explained from the beneficiary of the grain until it is served in the cup. The research carried out on this farm is donated to coffee producers, both to their suppliers and to those who do not sell them, because their objective is to improve the world quality of the grain, as well as the welfare of the families that depend on this activity. In this farm 17 coffee varieties resistant to rust have been developed, which have been donated to other producers. According to comments by Carlos Mario Rodríguez director of Global Economy at Starbucks, he chose Costa Rica to acquire this farm for the quality of his coffee and for his safety and political and economic stability. He also added that of the 240 hectares of land, 170 hectares are devoted to planting coffee and 10 hectares to research. The land also has protected areas. Tours are open to the public 364 days a year, except on December 25th.
