Located in the North Zone of Costa Rica, right on the slopes of the Arenal Volcano, in La Fortuna de San Carlos.
If you could not see the volcano, take a walk around the Lake Arenal, the largest lake in Costa Rica with 33km long. The landscape view is spectacular. Having the pleasure of navigating where once a village was cannot be done every day. The lake, lagoon, or artificial Arenal dam is the largest in Central America, it has an area of 85.5km2. The flow of the lake was increased three times in order to become a hydroelectric project, which currently produces 40% of the energy consumed in Costa Rica.
While driving west, it passes through farms, secondary forests and hamlets. The lake water is warm and good for swimming and year-round activities on Lake Arenal include fishing, boat tours, kayaking, sailboarding and windsurfing. The fishing is superb as well. Rainbow bass, a member of the cichlid family, are especially prolific in the lake´s waters. Their tasty white meat and feisty nature make them a challenge and delight – to catch. The area surrounding the lake is abundant with activity as well. There is hiking and mountain biking, horseback riding and bird watching. Birds that can be spotter in the area include hummingbirds and woodpeckers, kingfishers, toucans, aricari and more. For the activities the schedule is very varied. The same hotels have their own boats and there are also several companies dedicated exclusively to transport by the lake.
