  • It is located in the Province of Guanacaste, between the Bebedero River and the Tempisque River; approximately 30 kms to the west of the city of Cañas. Palo Verde is a birdwatcher´s paradise. It is the meeting place of the largest concentration of equatic and migratory birds of the Central American Pacific Coast. During the rainy season, the lowlands are transformed into huge wetlands which attracts even more diversity of life. In the wet season the floodwaters of the Río Tempisque spread to form extensive marshes that welcome migrant birds from the Americas at the onset of winter. Many of the resident tropical bird species nest on a small mangrove island in the Río Tempisque. In the dry season, many of the trees have dropped their leaves, and the wildlife is concentrated around the ever-shrinking water sources. One of the best strategies for spotting the many species of mamals that Palo Verde protects is to sit quietly near the water source. You can discover Palo Verde and its wildlife in a wide variety of tours. Next to the avian population, the Tempisque River also has the largest concentration of crocodiles in the country. You won´t only see crocodiles though, you will also get to see monkeys, anteaters, bats, and many more!

The Parque Nacional Palo Verde is not only a magnificent bird sanctuary, it is also an important refuge for one of the last remainders of the delicious dry forests of the Neotropics. The corrals and the old buildings present, are a reflection of the life in the Bajurean Sabanero and constitute a very important element in the cultural heritage of the old Guanacaste.
