  • It is located between the cantons of Nicoya and Cañas of the province of Guanacaste, and includes most of the mangrove areas and water mirrors of the Bebedero River up to the confluence of Lajas River. To get to this refuge, take the northern interamerican highway, until you reach the junction of the road that leads to the La Amistad Bridge over the Tempisque River. The objective of creating this refuge was the protection of the mangroves, which are areas of reproduction of the aquatic and terrestrial avifauna, as well as the different species of fish and shrimp. Mangroves in general play a key role in maintaining the ecological balance and biodiversity of estuarine environments, where the mangrove – basin – estuary relationship is subject to the movement of water; also fulfilling a fundamental role in the contribution of energy to tropical estuarine systems, therefore to fisheries and a wide range of indirect, tangible and intangible goods, and human activities usually impact on the factors that intervene in this process. The Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Cipancí is undoubtedly a buffer zone for protected wildlife areas, as well as an important bird nesting site, without neglecting that it is a protection area for the Tempisque River. The refuge offers the service of tourist tours by boat through the Fishermen’s Association of the Nispero community. In addition, it has several programs for environmental education and forest fires, administration, control, protection, research and volunteering.
