  • The Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Ostional is a beach and a national refuge for wildlife, located in the Península de Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, and is the second largest spawning site in the world. This small park is constituted mainly by a beach strip that goes from Punta India to the mouth of the Nosara River. Within its extension that is equivalent to 320 hectares of land and 8000 marine hectares, is the area of town of Ostional from which it is named. The beach of Ostional is the scenery for a rarely-seen biological wonder. In rainy season, the week before new moon, hundreds and sometimes hundreds of thousand sea turtles come to one specific mile of the beach at Ostional to dig their eggs into the black, volcanic sand. The Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Ostional was created to protect the one of the world´s most important nesting sites of the olive ridley sea turtle. It extends 15 km along the shoreline, including the beaches of Ostional, Nosara and Guiones. It is only a narrow, 200 meters wide strand of beach, but extends inland along the estuaries of the rivers and mangrove swamps where it also protects large colonies of birds. Offshore the reserve incorporates another 3 miles stretch of maritime zone. This refuge not only protects millions of turtles that nest annually but also cares for and protects the wild marine life and birds of the area.
