The Monumento Nacional Guayabo is located in the foothills of the Turrialba Volcano, 19km northeast of the city of the same name, in the province of Cartago. Its extension is 2179 hectares. It is one of the most important and largest archaeological areas that has been discovered in the country. Protects archaeological structures such as roads, mounds, bridges, catchment tanks and aqueducts, among others. I addition, it protects patches of high evergreen forests typical of the premontane rain forest. Many of the ancient stone carvings can be found here at the Monumento Nacional Guayabo. They show gods crocodile and jaguar. There are nine stone sculptures on the site. On the other hand, there are drawings of different animals, such as birds and cats.
