The Sanatorio Durán facilities are located 7km north of the city of Cartago, on the way to the Irazú Volcano National Park. Between the haze and the cold typical of the upper area of Cartago, this old building is located for those affected by Tuberculosis in Costa Rica. It has gained fame of tenebrous since, many affirm that their walls enclose spirits, ghosts or souls in pain. Either you believe you see something supernatural or not, it is a place worth visiting. The Sanatorio Durán was built in 1915. Because of its remoteness and isolation, it was a perfect place to house people suffering from Tuberculosis who had all the services of a hospital and 300 beds available. IT was founded by Carlos Durán Cartín, a well-known doctor and former interim president of Costa Rica (1889-1890). In 1963, the epidemic ceased and tuberculosis patients were treated in other medical centers. Subsequently, the building served as a prison. Due to the eruptions of the Irazú Volcano, the infrastructure suffered damages and this led to its closure in 1973. It is currently managed by UPA Nacional, which is the national union of small and medium Costa Rican farming producers, and is a tourist site of great interest. It is a place visited by adventurous people who are looking for an unforgettable time.
