It is located 31 Km northeast of the city of Cartago, Oreamuno canton, province of Cartago. Its name is of indigenous origin, it comes from the word “Istarú” which means hill of trembling and of thunder. With an altitude of 3,432 meters above the sea level, it is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. In the surroundings of craters, a low vegetation can be observed and diversity of species of flora and fauna can be distinguished. Due to its geological characteristics, it is an area of interest for students and scientists, since it has maintained eruptive manifestations in recent years. Observing the craters of the volcano is the main objective of those who visit this National Park. With a mountain environment, low vegetation and a very humid and cold climate, this site presents for most of the time. On clear days you can see from its summit both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, a large part of the national territory and, with a telescope, Lake Nicaragua.

    With your admission ticket to Irazú Volcano National Park, you are free to explore the park´s trails, viewpoints and educational exhibits on your own schedule. Because you can easily access the National Park, from San José and Cartago, booking a ticket in advance is an excellent option for travelers with their own transport.

    In the Craters Sector of the Irazú Volcano National Park there is a parking lot, a cafeteria, restrooms suitable for people with physical disabilities, an information booth located on the route to the main viewpoint, as well as three ranches for intended for lunch sites.
